CrypKey DLM - How Does it Work?

If you're looking for an easy, cost-effective method to protect your intellectual property from unauthorized use, CrypKey DLM is the solution you need.

CrypKey DLM (Data License Manager) provides secure control and distribution management of virtually any type of file. By allowing you to add security control “rights” that become encrypted with the file, your intellectual property stays protected from use by anyone except the intended recipient(s). The security rights that you assign to your file stay with the file — always!

CrypKey DLM protects files stored almost anywhere, including:

  • attached to an e-mail (even after it is sent)
  • stored on portable digital media (e.g., USB drive, CD, and DVD)
  • posted on your FTP site
  • stored on your desktop or network; you control the file protection so that even your system administrator can't view confidential or business-critical files

CrypKey's encryption process takes your file and the security control rights that you assign to it and encrypts them together. This is done using the best-quality American Encryption Standards (AES) and CrypKey's award-winning technologies. Once encrypted, your file cannot be opened or viewed without your authorization.

There are two types of authorization: password protection and license key authorization. License keys are used when you want to maintain complete security and control of your file. When using a license key, you restrict not only who can open your file, but also how they use it. For example, the file can be bound to a computer, thereby thwarting illegal copying. You can assign a trail period of use for the file in minutes, days, or number of uses. Optional security control rights include:

  • Print (no print screen to full-printing privileges)
  • Save to . . . (save on no machines to full save features)
  • Change (no file changes to many)
  • Distribution (no distribution to full distribution)
  • Network distribution (specified server vs. any server)
  • Viewing time (30 minutes to 365 days)
  • Open (open file one time to an unlimited number of times)
  • Computer access (open file on recipient's computer to any computer)

CrypKey DLM assists heavily-regulated industries, such as finance, pharmaceutical, and health care, in complying with government regulations to maintain strict control over documents like HIPAA (for health care) and Sarbanes-Oxley (for accounting).

How is CrypKey Licensed?

CrypKey Instant or CrypKey SDK is licensed on a per product basis. In other words, if you have more than one product to protect, a CrypKey license is required for each one. When you register your product with CrypKey, we require specific information from your company, such as the name of the file that you want CrypKey to lock to. This file name is used by CrypKey for the licensing contract.

If the product that you want to protect has many EXEs and DLLs that can all be unlocked with the same license restrictions (e.g., all files under an unlimited license), this is considered one product. Please note that both CrypKey Instant and CrypKey SDK have options and levels capabilities if you have different feature scenarios that you want to turn on or off; all options under one license have the same restrictions.

If different pieces of your application require different license restrictions (i.e., EXE “A” license is for 10 days and EXE “B” license is unlimited), then more than one CrypKey license is required.

Understanding Technical Support

Whether you're purchasing a small piece of software for personal use or a complex application for a corporate-wide implementation, effective technical support is key to the successful installation process and an ongoing, positive user experience.
