All Full-Featured Copy Protections Are Not Alike

In our previous issue, we outlined the results of a recent survey of 100 software developers. It revealed that developers' top five considerations when selecting a software security solution include the following:

  1. Basic security
  2. Ease of use
  3. Customer confidence
  4. Customized features
  5. Simplified pricing

This article will detail developers' basic security preferences.

Basic Security: Number One Developer Preference
Naturally, the protection solution chosen by a given developer must actually protect an application. Software developers currently looking at or already using software copy protection tools rated basic security--doing everything possible to prevent or deter unauthorized use of their applications--as their number one priority.

In describing their preferences, developers identified the following four (4) primary security risks that developers must understand:

  1. Reverse Engineering . This entails having the security essentially stripped off your application, leaving your software code fully exposed and available
  2. Creation of Illegal Key Generators . Reverse engineering enables others to create tools to generate working license keys for your applications without your knowledge or permission.
  3. Patching and Memory Dumping . These are common tactics using many of the same, increasingly powerful tools developers themselves use to work around the security.
  4. Hard Drive Cloning . This involves copying or ghosting entire hard drives to duplicate authorized software.

While some companies don't believe they need a high level of anti-piracy security, it only takes one person to remove whatever copy protection is being used--giving everyone on the Internet potential access to free unauthorized use of their software. If the copy protection currently used can be stripped away and discarded, the time and money invested in it has no value.

Must-Have Security Features Developers agreed that a high quality software copy protection solution should:

  • provide effective security that makes it difficult for anyone to have unauthorized access to your software without making it difficult for your honest, paying customers;
  • include adequate protection and still be reasonably simple to use - for both you and your customers;
  • enable you to confidently distribute secure trial versions of your software electronically; and
  • provide a complete feature set that makes trying your software easier and more appealing to prospective paying customers.

The CrypKey Solution
CrypKey's series of industry leading, proprietary technologies are designed to combat primary security attacks. CrypKey Instant and CrypKey SDK contain unsurpassed security capabilities while offering control, flexibility and ease of use matching any competitive products available. They incorporate several anti-piracy technologies including StealthPlus, CloneBuster, Dynamic Multi-Key Encryption, Easy License and CrypWrap. For more info on CrypKey's anti-piracy technology, see
