Transferring Licenses via USB Drive

There are several methods available to support license transfers for your CrypKey protected products. For computers on a network, the direct transfer is a one-step operation—the user simply transfers a license to another computer into a specified directory. Licenses can also be transferred back and forth across the Internet (checked in/check out) using eTransfer (this requires Casper). For computers that are not connected to the Internet or local network, licenses can be transferred by floppy disk or USB drive. Whether you use a floppy disk or USB drive, the process for transferring a license is the same:

  1. Insert a USB drive or floppy disk into the target computer and call the RegisterTransfer function.
  2. Insert a USB drive or floppy disk into the source computer and call the TransferOut function.
  3. Insert a USB drive or floppy disk into the target computer and call the TransferIn function.

New Utility—CrypKey USBKey Tools

Create and Update Your CrypKey USBKeys

CrypKey USBKey Tools is a new software utility that allows you to make and remotely update CrypKey USBKeys.

Before CrypKey USBKey Tools, giving a customer a CrypKey USBKey to enable your product meant ordering the key from CrypKey so that we could place the license on it for you.

Today, using CrypKey USBKey Tools and a CrypKey USBKey, you can create your own keys when you need them. Customization is easy; simply include the options and levels that you require. CrypKey USBKey Tools saves money and time.

CrypKey USBKey Tools is comprised of two programs:

  1. Multiburn.exe—This program burns CrypKey USBKeys. It inputs a simple configuration file that tells it the initial level and option settings, and performs the necessary steps to create a secure CrypKey USBKey. It:
    - completely cleans the drive of all files
    - reads serial data and places encrypted data on the drive that makes CrypKey recognize a valid license when it is present
    - Bonus!—preloads the drive with any files you want (e.g., your protected applications or data files)

MultiBurn does not require special hardware; just your USB port. However, with added USB port hardware, MultiBurn can automatically burn up to 20drives in one session. MultiBurn carefully logs the key creation activity, so that you have a record of what key went to which customer.
  2. MakeUSBUpdate.exe—By design, CrypKey has always allowed you to instantly turn on new levels and options in your software, wherever your customer is. We have also created this important feature in USBKey, using MakeUSBUpdate.exe.

MakeUSBKeyUpdate.exe allows you to create a secure update file that can be instantly sent to and used by your customer to change the level or options of a specific USBKey. This allows you up sell features of your software and immediately enables them without needing a new CrypKey USBKey. Using MakeUSBKeyUpdate.exe, it is simple to make an update for your customer. This utility includes a small program, UpdateUSBKey.exe, which makes it a simple “double-click” for your customer to install the update.

CrypKey and Thunderhead Engineering Deliver a Java Solution

CrypKey Now Supports Java Software on Windows Platforms

As part of our commitment to implement security in our commercial software, Thunderhead Engineering has developed a Java interface for CrypKey SDK. Our requirements for this included:

  • Security based on mature, robust technology
  • License control using only a software key (no hardware/dongle required)
  • Support for electronic license delivery (including automatic licensing of trial versions)
  • License control for different versions (such as trial, complete, and research versions)
  • Easily modify existing license without a new download (such as time extension or upgrade to the full version)

After evaluation, Thunderhead Engineering elected to build a Java wrapper to interface with CrypKey SDK. Purchasing CrypKey SDK and building on it allowed us to meet all requirements in a timely manner. We implemented Java functions to access the CrypKey library and developed a user interface in Java.

As a result of the successful implementation, Thunderhead Engineering has decided to offer this development as an extension to CrypKey SDK. Purchase of this extension provides access to the primary CrypKey SDK API and corresponding graphical user interface (GUI).

Product News—CrypKey is Supported on 64-bit Computers

CrypKey’s quality assurance testing has verified that our products are compatible on 64-bit computers that run 32-bit operating systems. Most new computers are 64-bit, and our support team has not received any feedback to date indicating problems on this hardware platform. Please note that CrypKey is not qualified to run on 64-bit operating systems or computers with dual processors. We are working towards compatibility with these configurations, and will produce beta versions for testing in the near future.
