All Full-Featured Copy Protections
Are Not Alike [continued...]
In our previous issue, we outlined the results of a recent survey
of 100 software developers. It revealed that developers' top five
considerations when selecting a software security solution include
the following:
- Basic security
- Ease of use
- Customer confidence
- Customized features
- Simplified pricing
This article will detail developers' preference for products that
are easy to use.
Developer Preference # 2: Ease of
Use
Easy to Manage
Developers seek software protection and license management solutions
that are easy to manage and highly customizable. They prefer protection
that makes it simple to issue license keys to their customers.
Most protection products offer little or no support for developers.
CrypKey is aware that developers appreciate the value of automating
this process. As such, Casper (CrypKey Automated Software
Purchasing & Electronic Registration) provides maximum
control by providing customers and prospective customers with online
registration and authentication services 24/7. As such, Casper
saves valuable time and enables IT staff to spend time and resources
on new projects, or activities and also allows developers to use
their own e-commerce enabled website, making the entire integration
easier to manage.
Highly Customizable
Developers also seek software protection that is easy to customize,
so their software looks and works the way it was intended to.
Most of the products tested by developers in this survey were rated
as too restrictive in terms of how functions worked, how they were
configured and their inability to do what developers expected. CrypKey
Instant and CrypKey SDK rated at the top
of their respective categories for providing all the features developers
want and expect. These protection products offer the ability to
customize how individual features will function with each software
application.
Trials That Deliver
Part of the easy-to-use protection factor is the need for product
trials that are easy to use and flexible. CrypKey provides the appropriate
tools to offer customers fully functioning software trials that
are both easy and secure. In addition to selecting a solution that
protects software against unauthorized copying and usage, there
are other considerations. CrypKey recommends selecting a software
protection that will...
- makes it easy for customers to obtain, install and sample demo
software;
- make it possible for all prospective customers to try any version
of the software;
- permit customers to try different levels, options and versions
for initial purchase and future upgrades/add-ons;
- provide the ability to "unlock" enhanced features
for customers to try.
What You Don't Want
Based on the survey results, CrypKey notes that developers do
not want:
- potential customers to have problems installing or configuring
demos, leading them to think the product is too complex;
- to offer trial options requiring extensive programming;
- potential customers to experiences demo problems. If the demo
version causes problems, they are then less likely to make a sale;
- an inflexible protection product that won't cater to existing
customers.
For answers to some of the most common questions we've received
from developers about product
trials.

a software protection solution in our March newsletter.
New USBKey Feature
USBKey is a 32MB to 2GB USB flash drive software
license management solution that offers an alternative to the common
"dongle" protection method. Unlike dongle solutions, which
hold only authorization codes to unlock software, USBKey
can hold a software application and the license to authorize it.
It is ideal for those who need to move their license from one computer
to another on a regular basis. The size of a car key, USBKey is
a simple and economical way to protect software licenses.
We now have the ability to remotely update your USBKey
. If you wish to add an option or change the level of a USBKey
that has already been sent to a customer, this can be done using
either of these two methods:
- MakeUSBKeyUpdate.exe, which takes in the necessary
information via a text file and creates an encrypted ".cuk"
data file; or
- UpdateUSBKey.exe, which will find the target
USBKey on the system, check for an existing license,
and update it using the ".cuk" data file.
CrypKey SDK Price Increase
Effective March 2005, CrypKey SDK will increase
in price by $200.00. CrypKey SDK is highly flexible
and includes robust features including customization, options and
levels. Effective April 2005, all CrypKey products will increase
by a marginal amount.
Annual Subscription Price Increase
Effective April 2005, Annual Subscription costs will increase.
A customer that has let their Annual Subscription lapse will be
required to pay the full cost of re-licensing the software. Until
now, renewing a lapsed subscription has resulted in a $200 penalty;
however, come April, it will be necessary to re-license the software
at prevailing rates.

Reminder: Update Annual Subscriptions

American Medical Association (AMA)
One of CrypKey's newest customers is the Chicago-based American
Medical Association (AMA).
The AMA was first organized in 1847 by a young
doctor in western New York. Dr. Nathan Smith Davis was elected to
the New York Medical Society in 1844 and a year later, introduced
a resolution to establish a national medical association to elevate
the standard of medical education in the United States. This association
became the AMA.
Today, the AMA is a leading advocate for physicians and patients
and is involved in working to improve the American health care system.
The association's Councils play a key role in establishing health
policies and the betterment of public health. For more info, see
