Top 5 Considerations for Software Security

An independent survey of 100 software developers indicates the following as the top five (5) considerations they consider to be vital when selecting software security solutions:

1. Basic Security. Naturally, the solution must actually protect an application.
2. Ease of Use. Most developers want complete control over how the protection integrates with their application but also want a solution that is easy to work with.
3. Builds Customer Confidence. They would like the software licensing process as difficult as possible for non-paying, unauthorized users…but never at the expense of good, paying customers.
4. Customized Features. Developers revealed the most important characteristics to compare in alternative solutions are customized features including license management, secure trial licensing and network license management capabilities.
5. Simplified Pricing. While many products claim to offer flexible pricing, their structures are in fact non-flexible and in some cases, require extra fees including per license and annual fees, and other fees each time you issue a product trial or make a sale.

Reminder: Support Ends for COM Server

The COM (Component Object Model) Server is proving to be too slow to be useful, and for this reason, it is no longer supported. We recommend using the DLL or COM Object instead.
Due to the stealth protection around CrypKey components, developers found it is not possible to step through CrypKey functions with their debuggers. This complicated the development process and resulted in a demand for a CrypKey component that could be debugged, especially by vendors with an API product.

CrypKey then developed the COM Server component (crypkeycomserver.exe), which allowed our COM to run as a system service. This allowed CrypKey function calls across process boundaries, which facilitated debugging in your IDE. The drawback to this was that making function calls across process boundaries is fifty times slower than calling functions from within the same process. In addition, concurrent access to the CrypKey COM service is not supported.

CrypKey components protect your application from debugging and reverse engineering. While this is normally a very good feature, you or your customers may need to be able to use a debugger on your application.
