Thought for the Day

Life is no brief candle for me. It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got hold of for the moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations.

~ George Bernard Shaw (1856 - 1920), Irish Dramatist and Literary Critic

CrypKey USBKey: A Simple File Distribution and License Management Solution

CrypKey USBKey is a 32MB to 2GB USB flash drive software license management solution that offers an alternative to the common dongle protection method. Unlike dongle solutions, which hold only authorization codes to unlock software, CrypKey USBKey can hold a software application and the license to authorize it.

Similar to the size of a car key, CrypKey USBKey is a durable, simple, and economical method of protecting software licenses. CrypKey USBKey is a "must have" for customers who take software or data with them when they leave their computer, and also for "unique situation" computers that cannot easily incorporate other protection methods.

CrypKey USBKey can work in conjunction with CrypKey licensing whereby both CrypKey USBKey and either CrypKey Instant or CrypKey SDK are used to protect the software application. To date, CrypKey offers the only combination hardware and electronic license management solution.

CrypKey USBKey is most beneficial to users who:

  • need to move their license from one computer to another on a regular basis
  • travel frequently
  • work both at the office and at home and who need the flexibility to transfer licenses easily
  • prefer an old-fashioned, tangible solution
  • require a back-up license

CrypKey USBKey is also popular among developers:

  • with high-priced software applications
  • who wish to deliver software and licenses in a “ready-to-run” format

Industry News: Windows Vista

Windows Vista, the name of the next major version of Microsoft Windows, is currently in its beta testing phase. Microsoft indicates the release dates for Windows Vista are currently November 2006 for business editions, and January 2007 for consumer editions. These release dates come more than five years after the release of Windows XP, Microsoft's current consumer and business operating system, making it the longest time span between releases of Windows.

Microsoft claims that Windows Vista has hundreds of new features, such as an updated graphical user interface and visual style, called Windows Aero ; improved security, PC-to-PC communication, and searching features; new multimedia creation tools such as Windows DVD Maker ; and completely redesigned networking, audio, print, and display subsystems. For developers, Vista introduces version 3.0 of the .NET Framework, which promises to make it significantly easier for developers to write high-quality applications than with the traditional Windows API.

We are closely following the development and release of Windows Vista, and we're continuing our proactive approach to ensuring that CrypKey 7 will be compatible with it.

What are Options and Levels?

Options and levels are flags that you can set (“on” or “off”) to indicate the state of different aspects of your application.

Within your application, you can control program flow based on the state of the options and levels. You can also control license protection and access to various aspects of a product, including:

  • modules
  • features
  • functions
  • version control

In general, CrypKey provides 32 bits to use for options and levels. If you need to extend your option and level requirements beyond this, we can assist you.

How It Works

As a vendor, you determine which levels and options are activated during the trial run of your software.

Using a Site Key Generator (SKG) or Casper , vendors can add or remove options for an existing license. Exactly how to implement options and levels is up to the individual vendor, however, some examples include:

  • With CrypKey Instant, modules can be locked to specific options without additional coding by using the “run module based on options” feature. This allows a vendor to quickly protect new modules for an application that shares the same license as the parent application. This facilitates rapid deployment by allowing the vendor to assign an option number to a module, apply protection, and distribute it without changing existing installations.
  • To meet more stringent requirements, CrypKey Instant allows a vendor to have finer control over options and levels at the code level.
  • Using CrypKey SDK, a vendor has complete control over how option and levels are implemented. A level check prevents end users from circumventing a new release trial or adopting a license from a previous release.
  • Typically, options are bound to the global parameters of a shared license, such as the expiry date. A vendor can, however, control the expiry date of individual options, or provide individual licenses to options while storing respective licenses in separate subdirectories.

Determining the best way to implement options and levels can be confusing, even for experienced programmers. We are happy to assist you in determining the best use of options and levels for your requirements. Contact us today at 1-403-258-6274.
