WellSight Systems Customer Profile: CrypKey Electronic Licensing for the Oil and Gas Industry
WellSight Systems Inc. uses CrypKey's electronic licensing to easily and effectively manage the distribution of its geological software suite.
WellSight Systems was started by a frustrated well site geologist who worried that he'd develop carpal tunnel syndrome if he was forced to continue the arduous process of drawing logs by hand day after day. As a result, he created an easy-to-use and affordable lithological strip log tool for well site geologists and mudloggers. Industry News: Microsoft Protects Vista Against Piracy, But At What Cost?
Microsoft reports that the new Software Protection Platform (SPP) for its yet-to-be-released Windows Vista and Longhorn operating systems has improved capabilities for detecting pirated versions of its software. According to Microsoft, the SPP does more than detect pirated software — it is also designed with the security of the computer user in mind too. But according to some Canadian privacy advocacy groups, this new technology crosses the line of computer users' ownership and privacy rights.
Microsoft's new operating system will have the ability to limit access to certain features of the software if it detects that the user's machine is running an unlicensed version. If a legitimate version is not installed within 30 days, the system will limit a user's access to the Web browser to just an hour at a time.
Opponents of this security approach, known as trusted platform module (TPM), (which is part of the controversial trusted computing [TC] concept), say it that places too much power and control over technology in the hands of software makers. They say TC deprives consumers of anonymity in online transactions.
