Product Feature - CrypKey DLM

Protect Your Intellectual Property (IP)

In today's world of ultra-convenient Internet communication, sharing electronic files is as easy as the click of your mouse. These days, not even a photocopier is required to easily distribute files. While most of us can't remember how we coped before the advent of e-mail and its many time- and cost-saving applications, there is a definite downside to this opportune method of communication: unauthorized distribution of intellectual property, or IP. In the time it takes to press the “Forward” button, your IP—any intellectual work that has commercial value—can land in the hands of countless unauthorized users without your knowledge.

CrypKey DLM (Data License Manager) is an innovative and secure way to keep your IP protected and ensure that it lands only in the hands it was intended for. Using the same battle-proven technology that we apply to software protection, CrypKey DLM first encrypts your sensitive or expensive files prior to sharing them. Once they are in “friendly hands”, you maintain control by authorizing their use. By providing an authorization key, file use is restricted to exactly the purpose you intended. For example, you may decide to have the file authorization expire after a number of days or after a number of viewings. Or, you may want to prevent the file from being copied. CrypKey DLM does this and more. Best of all, CrypKey DLM protected-files cannot be shared with others without your knowledge and authorization.

Some innovative ways that CrypKey DLM has helped our customers include:

  • securing sensitive medical records
  • protecting valuable PowerPoint and Flash presentations
  • maintaining control of confidential company documents
  • handling digital rights management (DRM) for audio (WAV) and video (MPEG) files

  • Controlled File Distribution — CrypKey USBKey allows you to have your program (i.e., software program; PDF documents, such as a catalog or price list; or PowerPoint presentation) available on a computer Hard Drive or on the USBKey itself. CrypKey 7.0 - Separate NGN Process

When CrypKey 6.0 was released, it introduced very sophisticated anti-debugging technology that we called Stealth. At the time, the Internet made possible a proliferation of increasingly effective reverse engineering tools that were available to anyone. This increased the chances that application software protection could be removed or circumvented. Stealth technology raised the bar of security by preventing debuggers from working on applications that it protected. This proved to be an excellent deterrent of reverse engineering and software protection removal.

The problem with Stealth in CrypKey 6.0 was that it worked so well, it made it impossible for the developer to use a debugger on an application once CrypKey was included. The reason for this problem was that the CrypKey NGN (crp32001.ngn), the file that contains the CrypKey functions, was protected by Stealth. This meant that any process that called the functions was also automatically under Stealth protection.

CrypKey 7.0 solves this problem. The NGN now operates in its own, separate process space, and does not automatically protect applications that use it. Stealth can now be added to the application at anytime the developer desires.

CrypKey Stealth Now Supports .NET 2.0

CrypKey Stealth encryption now supports .NET framework 2.0—this was not previously supported in version 6.5. In addition, we now provide a simple process to Stealth-protect an EXE/DLL combination. This process takes your DLLs and merges them into a single EXE that is then encrypted. This functionality is not yet built into the Stealth/Instant GUI, but it will be in the near future. Please contact CrypKey Support at support@CrypKey.com regarding the manual steps required for the EXE/DLL combination encryption.

New Study Shows Enterprise DRM Market is Advancing

A September 2005 study produced by Sage Research, an IT market research firm, revealed that recognition of Enterprise Digital Rights Management (EDRM) technology within corporations, as well as both current and planned adoptions of it, is on the rise.

DRM refers to any technology that protects intellectual property from illegal use, distribution, or copyright infringement. Normally, these technologies use some form of encryption to protect digital products.

EDRM technologies protect and track content as it moves throughout an organization's networked environment, including third parties, such as vendors and suppliers.

The study by Sage Research, which surveyed 100 IT professionals in corporations with more than 1,000 employees, asked respondents about their current and planned use of DRM within an enterprise environment. The study also outlined management concerns, and important features and benefits of EDRM.

The study showed that 26% of the organizations surveyed never heard of EDRM before. It also shows that 9% of respondents have already implemented some form of DRM, while a total of 34% have plans to implement it. Just over half of respondents indicated their intent to purchase a solution from a DRM vendor instead of from a vendor of content/document management systems.

The finding that 26% of respondents had never heard of EDRM before actually demonstrates a significant improvement in overall corporate recognition of this technology. Just 16 months earlier, a similar study of EDRM conducted by JupiterResearch showed a considerably lower rate of EDRM technology recognition. The same study predicted that spending by US companies on EDRM technologies would grow from $36 million in 2003 to $274 million in 2008.

CrypKey DLM is an example of a DRM technology that is growing in demand by all types of businesses (see Product Feature—CrypKey DLM). Employing proven methods of both license and password protection, CrypKey DLM helps corporations combat the illegal use and distribution of almost any type of intellectual property.

Simplified Pricing vs. Royalty Pricing

At CrypKey, we want to help you be successful and grow your software sales. Our award-wining products and savvy pricing solutions are designed to maximize your bottom line profits. With CrypKey, each software license you sell reduces the average cost to protect it. Very simply, the more software you sell, the less you pay to protect each license.

Unlike many other software protection companies that boast “flexible” product pricing, CrypKey is one of the few businesses that deliver a truly simplified, no-royalty, no-hassle pricing structure. Our model permits you to pay a one-time license fee per software product protected, regardless of the number of licenses you issue. This is unlike most of our competitors. Some vendors sell their products through annual, subscription-based pricing. Other models are based on a per license fee, which means you pay for every license issued—sometimes even if you are merely providing a demo or evaluation license to a prospective customer.

Since 1992, our customers have indicated that this simplified, one-time license fee model is both fair and cost-effective. Our 2004 survey of independent software developers showed they are very passionate about what they prefer when it comes to pricing structures and reaffirmed the need for simplistic and cost-effective pricing models.

CrypKey's simplified pricing allows you to:

  • issue as many licenses as needed
  • issue licenses when you want to
  • issue licenses from the computer of your choice
  • have three Site Key Generators (SKGs)
  • install the SKGs on your server or on three computers
  • add Casper (CrypKey Automated Software Purchasing & Electronic Registration) to automatically process customer transactions and issue licenses 24/7
