Announcing CrypKey ASP: Licensing for ASP.NET

CrypKey ASP is an advanced user-management application with a web-based interface. It licenses and controls active server page (ASP) web content from unauthorized and illegal use. CrypKey ASP easily integrates with your ASP application by adding a small amount of code.

CrypKey ASP's licensing features include:

• options and levels — allows you to manage users based on their level of access
• authorization — the Site Key Generator (SKG) allows you to license the CrypKey-protected ASP application with the restrictions you require
• use limited — allows you to specify license usage for a number of uses
• day limited — allows you to specify license usage for a number of days
• node lock — allows a single product to be licensed to a single workstation
• enterprise network features — license not only a standalone computer that an application is installed on, but also the entire enterprise network; a software license can be accessed by any network computer

Industry News: JupiterResearch Study Legitimizes Enterprise DRM Market

A July 2004 JupiterResearch study reported the results of a study entitled Digital Rights Management for the Enterprise, which focused exclusively on DRM for corporate document security applications.

The most notable findings in the JupiterResearch study had to do with the functions and features of Enterprise DRM technologies that corporate buyers consider most important and the vertical markets that are the most likely early adopters for the technology. Corporate IT managers find that DRM-related technologies can be useful for plugging two significant holes that existing security technologies do not address: documents sent by email to unauthorized recipients, and the proliferation of portable devices that could contain sensitive information.  The three most important technology features are:

• auditing and tracking of information use
• digital signatures for verification of authors and content of documents
• the ability to set access restrictions both at document creation time and thereafter. 

The vertical markets deemed most likely to adopt Enterprise DRM solutions in the near future are financial services, high-tech manufacturing, and government.

Industry News: Symantec Snafu Could Set Precedent

A June 2007 ComputerWorld Canada story by Rafael Ruffolo reported Symantec Corp.'s decision to compensate 50,000 users who lost their data due to a recent, faulty Norton antivirus update. Many technology executives believe that this action could set a precedent in how companies deal with software problems. The Symantec snafu may give users in North America and Europe a point of reference when faced with similar issues in the future.

The situation began last month, when a software update to Chinese users caused Norton antivirus software to inadvertently identify two Windows XP files as malware and quarantine them. The mistake put tens of thousands of users face-to-face with the Blue Screen of Death. To remedy the situation, Symantec has offered affected consumers a 12-month Norton license extension and a copy of Norton Save & Restore 2.0. Business users can be eligible to receive Symantec Ghost Solution Suite licenses, depending on how many PCs were affected.

Despite the flood of angry message board posts and two launched lawsuits, Symantec is protected by licensing agreements that governs the use of its products. In essence, the company does note make any promises that the operation of the software will be uninterrupted or that the software will be error-free.

Sunset on Casper eRegister and Casper eCommerce 1.x and CrypKey 5.7

What version are you using? The current version for Casper is 2.0; build 230 encompasses all the latest technology and upgrades available. Effective November 30, 2006 , CrypKey no longer supports Casper 1.x. If you are still using Casper 1.x please contact our technical support team to determine a transition plan for upgrading your software.

With the release of CrypKey 7, we no longer support version 5.7. To ensure a smooth transition of your protected application(s), please contact technical support to discuss an implementation strategy that's best for you. We also advise customers to download the new CrypKey 7 instead of attempting to upgrade version 5.7, due to the vast changes in the technologies between versions.

Did You Know? CrypKey no longer supports Windows 3.1, 95, and 98.
